Our Story

When we met in 1999, Kathleen was pregnant with her first baby, and I was raising my first child. Within hours of our meeting, I arrived on her doorstep against my husband’s best advice with a lot of books about pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. She must have thought I was crazy, but it was ultimately the beginning of a wonderful journey of growth for both of us—as women, mothers and as doulas.

After a stressful and confusing first birth, Kathleen became pregnant with her second baby, and I was able to support her through a time of intense growth, discovery and insight. I became certified as a doula shortly after her daughter’s amazing arrival into the world. Kathleen began her own certification process shortly afterwards, her passion for supporting women and families having been sparked by a much more empowered experience the second time around.

A few years later, when my second pregnancy ended in a stillbirth accompanied by a traumatic and painful hospital stay, Kathleen was steadfast and steady, supporting my husband and me through one of the most painful and profoundly sad times of our lives. Less than a year later, Kathleen was again there for us at the birth of my beloved daughter. Since then, I’ve had my third baby at home with Kathleen again at my side. I feel so blessed to have such a wonderfully supportive and confident partner and friend.

In 2005 when I gave birth to my third child and realized my vision of an unmedicated water birth. I was supported while finally having the beautiful, peaceful, and triumphant experience in birth I had been seeking. It changed how I felt about myself and truly empowered me to believe in my own strength. Since becoming a birth doula in 2002 I have had the pleasure of supporting so many women through their transformative birth experiences. Short or long, natural or medically assisted, the shared experience of laboring women is one empathy, humor and pride. Being a doula is an extreme privilege.

Based on these shared experiences, we have decided to translate our journey together into a shared vision of supporting women through childbirth. We have each helped women along a continuum that ranges from completely unmedicated birth, to VBAC, to Cesarean section. Now, in partnership, we hope to help women and their partners to make informed, individualized choices regarding their care and help them realize their expectations of a rewarding birth experience.

"We hope that our legacy of friendship, growth, respect, and awe of the birthing process will inspire you and your family in your own journey towards labor, childbirth, and beyond." - Kathleen and Britt
